Description

These 3-Ingredient Flower Shortbread Cookies offer a delightful burst of buttery flavor with minimal prep. Perfect for any occasion, these cute cookies emphasize simplicity and taste, making them an excellent choice for homemade gifts or celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick / 115g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 1/4 cup (35g) powdered sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (120g) all-purpose flour, spoon and leveled
  • your choice of gel or liquid-gel food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, powdered sugar, salt, and vanilla until combined.
  2. Add the all-purpose flour to the mixture, stirring until there are no visible dry streaks.
  3. For colored petals, reserve a small amount of the dough for the centers, then mix food coloring into the larger portion of dough.
  4. Roll 1 teaspoon sized portions of the dough into smooth balls. If the dough is too sticky, refrigerate for 30 to 60 minutes to firm up.
  5. Arrange dough balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet in flower shapes, with a ball of uncolored dough at the center surrounded by colored balls as petals. Ensure good spacing between cookies.
  6. Chill the formed cookies in the freezer for 10 minutes to maintain their shape. Preheat the oven to 350°F during this time.
  7. Bake in the center of the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes until the tops are no longer shiny and lightly golden at the edges.
  8. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Chilling the shaped cookies is essential for maintaining their design during baking.
Feel free to experiment with different food colors to create vibrant flower petals.
Store cooled cookies in an airtight container to keep them fresh.
