Ingredients
Scale
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 small yellow onion diced (about 1 cup)
- 1 pound ground beef 90/10 or 80/20 lean
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt or to taste
- Black pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 4 cloves garlic grated or minced
- 2 teaspoons worcestershire sauce
- 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
- 1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley
- 28 ounce can crushed tomatoes
- 15 ounce can tomato sauce
- 1 cup water
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- 1 parmesan cheese rind optional, but recommended
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat.
- Add the ground beef and diced onion; season with salt and pepper, crumbling the beef as it cooks. Drain excess grease when browned.
- Incorporate tomato paste, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and dried herbs into the pot, cooking for 1 minute.
- Pour in crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce, adding water to the empty cans to swirl and remove any remaining sauce before combining everything in the pot.
- Stir in sugar and balsamic vinegar; add the Parmesan cheese rind. Bring to a boil, cover, reduce heat, and simmer for 30 minutes.
- After simmering, stir in chopped fresh basil and serve immediately over noodles, or let cool and refrigerate or freeze for later use.
Notes
The flavor improves if the sauce is made a day ahead and allowed to sit overnight in the refrigerator.
Feel free to adjust the herbs and spices according to your taste preferences. Enjoy with grated Parmesan on top for extra flavor!
This sauce can be stored in the freezer for up to three months.
