Description

This recipe for caramelized onions offers a rich, savory flavor created with simple ingredients like yellow onions, butter, and olive oil. Ideal for enhancing sandwiches, dips, and more!


Ingredients

  • 4 lbs medium or large yellow onions
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons packed dark brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Cut the onions in half from root to tip and remove the root with a paring knife.
  2. Thinly slice each onion half into ¼-inch thick half moons and place in a mixing bowl.
  3. In a large pot, heat the butter and olive oil over medium heat.
  4. Add a handful of onions to the pot, stirring often until soft and translucent, about 2 minutes. Repeat until all onions are added.
  5. Lower the heat to medium-low, stirring occasionally while cooking for 45-50 minutes until the onions are deeply caramelized.
  6. Once deeply brown, add the brown sugar and salt, cooking for an additional 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and cool.
  7. Transfer cooled onions to an airtight container for storage.

Notes

Caramelized onions can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one week.
These onions are versatile for dips, soups, or as a sandwich topping.
Keep stirring occasionally to avoid burning while cooking.
