- 1 ½ cups sugar
- Zest from 1 navel orange
- ¾ cup butter, softened
- 3 eggs
- ½ cup milk
- ¼ cup orange juice
- ¼ cup applesauce
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 ½ cups all purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp orange juice
- ¼ tsp vanilla
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a 9” cake pan with parchment paper; set it aside.
- In a large bowl, combine the sugar and orange zest, rubbing them together until fragrant. Add the softened butter and beat until fluffy, about 1-2 minutes.
- In the same bowl, add the eggs, milk, orange juice, applesauce, and vanilla. Mix until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring just until the flour is incorporated. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan.
- Bake for 50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack.
- For the glaze, whisk together the orange juice and vanilla, then mix in the powdered sugar until smooth.
- Pour the glaze over the cooled cake and smooth it out before slicing.
