Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 6 ounces spaghetti
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 large eggs
- ½ cup grated parmesan cheese
- 1 cup ricotta cheese
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley or 2 teaspoons dried parsley
- ½ teaspoon dried basil or 1 tablespoon fresh
- 1 pound lean ground beef or italian sausage
- ½ small onion diced
- 14.5 ounces canned diced tomatoes drained
- 2 cups pasta sauce or marinara sauce
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a deep-dish pie plate.
- In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat and drain any excess fat. Add the diced onion and cook until softened, about 3 minutes. Stir in the diced tomatoes and pasta sauce, and let simmer uncovered for 10 minutes until thickened.
- While the sauce simmers, cook the spaghetti al dente in a large pot of salted boiling water according to package directions. Drain well when done.
- Place the drained spaghetti into the prepared pie plate. Add the butter and toss to coat the spaghetti evenly. Stir in the eggs and grated parmesan cheese, then press the mixture to form a crust.
- In a separate bowl, mix the ricotta cheese with chopped parsley and basil. Spread this mixture over the spaghetti crust, then top with the meat sauce.
- Bake uncovered for 20-25 minutes, then sprinkle with mozzarella cheese and bake for an additional 5 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Allow to rest for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
For added flavor, consider mixing in other herbs like oregano or thyme.
You can substitute ground turkey for a lighter version, or use meatless sausage for a vegetarian option.
This dish is great for leftovers and can be reheated in the oven or microwave.
